TEETH WHITENING

WHAT IS TOOTH WHITENING?

Tooth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure aimed at lightening the color of teeth and removing stains and discoloration. It is typically done using bleaching agents that contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Tooth whitening can be performed in our dental surgery after undergoing a full dental examination to ensure suitability and safety for your dental and oral health. The process involves applying the whitening agent to the teeth and allowing it to penetrate the enamel to break down stains and brighten the tooth's color. Results vary depending on the method used and the severity of discoloration, but generally, tooth whitening can noticeably improve the appearance of teeth, making them appear whiter and brighter.

IS TOOTH WHITENING SAFE?

Tooth whitening, when performed by a qualified dental professional  considered safe. However, there are some potential risks and considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Tooth Sensitivity: Whitening agents can sometimes cause temporary tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. This sensitivity typically resolves after the whitening treatment is completed or discontinued.
  2. Gum Irritation: Whitening products may irritate the gums if they come into contact with them. This can lead to temporary gum irritation or inflammation, which usually subsides once the treatment is stopped.
  3. Enamel Damage: Overuse of whitening products or using products with high concentrations of bleaching agents without professional guidance can potentially damage the enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity and weakening of the teeth.
  4. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of tooth whitening can vary depending on factors such as the type and severity of stains, the concentration of the whitening agent, and individual factors like genetics. Some types of stains, such as those caused by certain medications or internal tooth discoloration, may not respond well to whitening treatments.
  5. Pre-existing Dental Conditions: Individuals with certain pre-existing dental conditions, such as gum disease, tooth decay, or exposed tooth roots, may not be suitable candidates for tooth whitening. It's essential to have a dental examination before undergoing whitening treatment to ensure that your dental health is optimal.
  6. Temporary Results: The results of tooth whitening treatments are not permanent and may fade over time, especially with habits like smoking or consuming staining foods and beverages. Top up gels can be purchased to achieve continuous results
